About forty of Azusa USD's elementary school GATE Students just got one step closer to becoming the types of leaders that America needs. For six weeks the students met in groups of about eight students after school on Thursdays to learn about characteristics of effective leaders. Each group was led by a pair of sociology students from a course taught by APU Professor Deb Baker. The APU students planned an agenda for each lesson that included reading children's stories, doing hands on activities, and discussing the leadership trait of the week. Character traits included honesty, responsibility, self-discipline, and compassion. Not only did our GATE students learn about leadership, they also made some new friends, and had a lot of fun! Thanks to Dr. Baker, this program has become an annual event, so anyone who didn't have a chance to participate this year can join us next time.
