Ways to Relax in Palacios

1. Fishing

Kick back and relax with a day of fishing. Palacios has two 400′ lighted fishing piers, allowing fishing all day and night. There are also small individual areas along the bay shore.

If you have your own boat, you have 3 boat ramps to choose from, and a large bay with good fishing (Tres Palacios which becomes part of the famous Matagorda Bay). If you don’t have your own boat, a number of great fishing guides are available.

Although you can’t just hop on board a shrimp boat, it is an enjoyable sight to drive around the harbor and look at all of these boats. About 450 shrimp boats call Palacios their home, one of the largest fleets in the United States.

2. Birding

Discover the amazing diversity of life in the air. The Palacios area has numerous sites where you can view bird life in its native habitat, and many of these are conveniently highlighted on the Coastal Bend Birding Map. This area regularly records the highest number of species in the Audubon Society’s Christmas Bird count, meaning that we are home to more species of birds than anywhere else in the USA. Many shore birds can be seen here, with the Brown Pelicans here year round. White Pelicans can be seen in the winter time, as can Sandhill Cranes, geese and numerous hawks.

3. Shopping

Palacios has several unique stores and shops to visit. Browse antiques, gifts, books, art, collectibles, seaside souvenirs and much more. You’re bound to discover some one-of-a-kind treasures here.

4. Eating

Numerous restaurants are available in Palacios, ranging from Steaks, Seafood and Mexican Food to Fast Foods. Restaurants

5. Exercise

Palacios has a 1 ½ mile seawall along the bayfront for those who enjoy walking or running.

Although the hike & bike trail has not yet been completed, it should be a reality before too long. However, most Palacios streets do not have a lot of traffic, so there are plenty of places to ride a bike. However, don’t look for any hills to climb on your mountain bike. Palacios is pretty flat!

6. History

There are approximately 13 state Historic Markers around town as well as the City by the Sea Museum.

Our museum houses a LaSalle Exhibition on the famous shipwreck of the LaBelle. Palacios played a large part in the excavation of LaSalle’s ship, LaBelle, and is also part of a seven-county LaSalle Odyssey Trail.

Palacios is included on the Texas Independence Trail and is part of the Texas Settlement Region, so there is a lot of history to discover here.

7. Slow Down

With a population of around 5000, Palacios is a little slower moving than the bigger cities in the region, so one of the draws is to just come on down, grab a good book and relax. There is a small beach for those who want to ‘grab a few rays’ while they relax, or you can sit on the porch of the many vacation houses, B & B’s or our historic Luther Hotel.

8. Visit
